What's your undertone & why it matters for spray tanning

Choosing the right spray tan solution can be a bit of a challenge. The key is to choose a solution that complements your skin tone and undertones. Here's how to determine your skin undertones and choose the right spray tan solution based on that.

1. Determine your skin undertones

Before choosing a spray tan solution, you need to determine your skin undertones. There are three undertones: cool, warm, and neutral. Cool undertones have a pink, red or bluish hue, while warm undertones have a yellow or golden hue. Neutral undertones have a mix of both cool and warm undertones.

One easy way to determine your undertones is to look at the veins on your wrist. If your veins appear blue or purple, you have cool undertones. If they appear green, you have warm undertones. If you can't tell whether your veins are blue or green, you may have neutral undertones.

Another way to determine your undertones is to hold up a piece of silver jewellery and a piece of gold jewellery next to your skin. If the silver jewellery looks better against your skin, you have cool undertones. If the gold jewellery looks better, you have warm undertones. If both look good, you may have neutral undertones.

2. Choose the right spray tan solution

Once you have determined your undertones, you can choose the right spray tan solution. If you have cool undertones, choose a spray tan solution that has a cool or neutral base. Look for solutions with blue or violet undertones, as these will counteract any orange or yellow tones in your skin.

If you have warm undertones, choose a spray tan solution that has a warm or neutral base. Look for solutions with green or brown undertones, as these will enhance the natural warmth in your skin.

If you have neutral undertones, you can choose a spray tan solution with either a cool or warm base. Look for solutions that have a balance of blue, violet, green and brown undertones.

3. Test the spray tan solution

Before applying the spray tan solution all over your body, it's important to do a patch test first. Apply a small amount of the solution to a small area of your skin, and wait 24 hours to see if any irritation or allergic reactions occur.

Once you've done the patch test, apply the spray tan solution evenly over your skin, following the instructions provided by your spray tan technician. Make sure to exfoliate and moisturise your skin beforehand to ensure an even application.

By determining your skin undertones and choosing the right spray tan solution, you can achieve a natural-looking, beautiful glow that complements your skin tone. Remember, always choose a reputable spray tan technician and follow their instructions for the best results.
